Rock Ed Radio is still not sure of its status. As of today, even our gigs are not announced on NU "until the air clears." (quote, unquote Jamo) So if it's okay, can we communicate through this website for now?

On Sunday May 24 many people from Rock Ed will gather by the Manila Bay (Baywalk stretch across Malate Church). We will gather at around 4pm. Many of us will bring books and we encourage to trade books with each other. Give books away. Knock on car doors to give books away. Give books to the vendors of mangga, fishballs, balut, balloon, icecream etc. We also hope to give some books to the kids who hang around the bay side.

This is our gathering to organize a reaction towards the Dept of Finance and the Bureau of Customs for taxing books. To read more, google: "The great book blockade of 2009."

Wala pa rin kaming show this Sunday at hindi pa rin kami sigurado kung hanggang kelan pa kami suspended o kung maibabalik pa kami sa ereh. Oras na may balita kami, magpo-post kami dito. Sa ngayon talaga hindi ko alam.

Pero salamat talaga sa mga (hanggang ngayon) ay nagtatanong pa rin kung kailan kami babalik. Ibig sabihin nun meron pala talagang nakinig sa Rock Ed Radio nung nakaraang dalawang taon. Yay!

Let's talk to Dr. Art Libao, head honcho of PEDYA-KAMP - A non-stock, non-profit, non-governmental organization that caters a 10-day out-of-town SUMMER CAMP for special children (orphaned, streetchild, handicapped or disabled, mentally challenged). Numerous activities are prepared for the children, among these are: sagalahan, swimming, bisitang bahay, kite flying, mask making, bayanihan, city tour, puppetry, pedyalympics, alay ni ate't kuya, etc.

Volunteers of the organization comes from different colleges and universities like: UP, Ateneo, DLSU, EAC, St. Jude, PUP, PNU, PLM, PCU, St. Scho, St. Paul, among others. There are some professionals who also volunteers like teachers, social workers, gov't employees, etc. Every month, the volunteers also held outreach program, a.k.a. “Ha Homonhon” (In Homonhon) is a documentary film that follows the story of a man, Eladjio Princillo or Tata Ladying, who goes on a quest to reclaim his land from a Chinese multinational mining firm after he discovers a "No Trespassing" in the land that he and his family till. Homonhon is an island in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines, on the south east side of Leyte Gulf. The place is more known to be the island of Ferdinand Magellan’s first landfall when he circumnavigated the Earth. The whole island is a public/forest land.

This Sunday, ROCK ED RADIO hosts the first (in a long time) radio singing contest. It's originally entitled CPR (contest pang radyo) and it is designed to revive the radio star.

The contest mechanics are as follows:

Secret contestant is introduced. (So, no, we cannot reveal who our guests are, but I assure you, it will be exciting.)

Singer sings a song from Ronnie Dizon's (of the Ronnies) very wide repertoire.

Listeners vote for best singer from their homes.

The contest is not to guess who the singer is as we will reveal who they are when the winner is declared. This tilt is designed to revive the appreciation for the VOICE!

We will discuss singing contests in general, after. (Idol, Star Search etc etc)

Gaano ka bigat ang itchura, galaw, suot sa singing contest? Kung mabigat, eh bakit singing contest ang tawag d'on?

Let's talk to (the group now known as) the Tagaytay 5. Arrested in Feb 2006 on charges of subversion etc, the political detainees were finally set free last week. Check out the Victory Party poster above.

At first we thought they'd hold the party at the appropriately named FREEDOM BAR along Anonas, but I think they chose a more aptly-named place: CONSPIRACY along Visayas. (hehehe)

EVENTSEC prides itself in understanding the effects of alcohol on your brain. So yes, there is a science to their protecting you.

You always see them. Silently standing by the exit areas. They hardly smile at your drunken mug because they always mean business. And your safety is their foremost concern. Yes, the protection of life, health and property is what they are about-- not annoying brat wimps with male-hood issues. Although sometimes it looks that way. They will harm you only if you are harmful to the greater number presently partying in the same event as you are.
The gentle (large) men of EVENTSEC are professionally trained, they are organized, smart, they offer a tight defense against scums of the gig earth. They are kind and will always be polite by default. And only when you mess with them do they show their fangs. (and their cement block biceps, and then you know that your choice to misbehave wasn't a a smart move at all.)
Rock Ed Radio and NU107 will always salute the men who keep the safety on while allowing us to rock our adolescent heads off.
And Rock Ed will always thank BINALOT (huh?) because the security guys will always ask for extra rice during an event, and BINALOT always gives us extra rice. Haha. So there.

Anyway, maybe you have an opinion, a story, an anecdote regarding safety at a gig?

Have you ever felt unjustly handled by a bouncer during a concert? (think about it again, did you deserve it? If you insist no, then tell us about your experience.) We are often surprised when we hear a good song on mainstream radio and find out that it's self-produced. Which raises the question: "Does a big label validate talent?"

Indie labels are on the rise but the self-produced work is another beast altogether.

Let's talk to artists who manage and produce themselves. Patrick Alvarez is producing "Wonder" his first album, Aimee Marcos is the drummer of the band called The Dorques (also self-producing so far...) and Dystocia Curve is a highly prolific band that is still in the outskirts of the scene. They have recorded approximately 60 tracks by now and they plan to release an album within the year.

Poet and Executive Producer of Panoramanila Pictures, Jourdan Sebastian will tell us about the behind-the-scenes vibe of the independently produced film entitled "Ploning."

The creative scene in the Philippines is brimming with robust talent. Why wait for the breaks, they say? Well, they're not. (Bravo)

Historically, a gamer was someone who played role-playing games or war games, but more recently the term has come to include computer and video game players. Although the term technically includes those who do not necessarily consider themselves gamers (ie, casual gamers), it is a commonly used term to identify persons who spend as much of their leisure time as possible playing or reading about games. *

Okay, since the Montanos came out on National TV last week, we surmise that it is now okay to make the Brian Gorrell blog a case study on Rock Ed Radio. Both sides have aired the laundry so now the discussion is fair game. Is the Gorrell blog libelous, a solid case of defamation, blackmail? Is it simply an out-of-hand rant of a lover dumped or isa ba siyang venue para manumpit ng patama sa mga Dona Victorina ng ating panahon? (or is it a venue to spit darts onto the Dona Victorinas of our time?)

What do you think?

Some people say that blogging is a personal thing therefore the ethics that journalists are subject to do not apply to blogging, but the worldwide web is very different from a handwritten journal placed under your mattress. So they say, nay! ...journalistic ethics still apply. But wait! A blogger is not a journalist, even if a journalist can blog.What is the leeway you will give to bloggers and blogging? Which lines will you cross, not cross or snort. Tadah. (that just slipped out now, didn't it?)

No out and out judgments here, just tell us your take on the verb "blogging," please. Oh and maybe it's good to leave out the others alone, but the Montanos not excempt. They're part and parcel of this one. After all, they did come out in the 'nationalest of national TVs' (Korina, no less)

So. I shall refrain saying any more on this post. But I will certainly handwrite something and tuck the moleskin under my bed. And if I were DJ, I'd say, "You'd have to pull out my 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets to know what I really think." Of course, engineer par excellence Mark Laccay will join us, too. Unbeknownst to many, (even to him!) Mark won the Rock Ed "Best Supporting-Lead Vocals" award. (sangkanaman nakarinig nonnnnn?!) The only award of its kind. He earned this by ably "support-screaming" for Radioactive Sago Project while sitting in the sound booth during a WILD WILD gig somewhere in the South.... because Lourd lost most of his voice right before the gig. (isipin mo yon....)

And to a group called Creative Commons. (yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey) Let's get to know what these people on-the-edge REALLY do. More importantly, what they stand for. We're sure they don't call themselves such for nothing.

Rem Zamora, thespian (Repertory Phils) and restaurateur (Piquant) along with Bryan Valenzuela of the School of Fashion Arts and Erica Paredes (This Kid Loves Vintage) will tell us what they used to do with their summer vacations. At kung meron bang isang summer na nagbago ang lahat ng desisyon nila. Yogi Tesa Celdran (Pulse Yoga) will join us and a storyteller from Adarna Books will represent the Raya School, instead of the earlier announced Ani Almario-David. :)

Well. Let's see. It's Easter Sunday (for the Christians) so maybe we should talk about something along those lines. Lots of segments for this coming show. Read on:

Let's listen to a 'transformed' life. (translation: nawalan ng trabaho, hehe loko lang, Sir --peace!) Recently resigned from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, veteran actor, guardian of the arts, former Vice-President and Artistic Director of the CCP --Nanding Josef will tell us his Easter story.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand --- writer Panjee Tapales and International Man of Mystery (haha wala akong ibang description Dale, sorry --are you a writer, too?) Dale Diaz of PAG-ASA (Peoples Assembly for Genuine Alternatives to Social Apathy) will tell us about hope. and HOPEfully Nicanor Perlas can join the group as well. (wow puro hope) I suppose summer is a good time to search for hope. (whut?) :) Seriously, let's learn more about this group and why they bravely call themselves PAG-ASA.

A rep from the Philippine Educational Theater Association (or PETA) might join us, too.

Ani and CP David of the Raya School will start off the hour by telling us how or why it's good to stay away from being idle over the summer. Sa dami nang nalilito tungkol sa mga nangyayari, nasasabi, na fi-feature sa TV -- Rock Ed Radio decided to invite a round of people who may be able to take some of our questions. This may very well settle some disputes we've had with our friends or uncles in the past month. :)

Let's ask people. Maybe, our government is more transparent than we think it is. Maybe the answers are available but we just never asked. Never react from hearsay -- ask the source. Now might be a good time to do that. DOTC's ASec Lorenzo "Amboy" Formoso is the Chief Legal Counsel of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT). His office is directly in charge of the NBN-ZTE project proposal and its purposes. He will guest on Rock Ed Radio and decided to take on our questions this Sunday. What is this NBN-ZTE project all about anyway and why is it in such hot water lately? Now is a good time to ask from all sides. Post away!

And as most of you requested --- Former NEDA Chief Solita "Mareng Winnie" Monsod has been invited and will confirm her attendance in a few days. (so far, so good) She can shed some insight on this one, we're almost certain. In the light of all this, how do we best participate? Do we rally or not rally? Are we helpless? Are the decisions really only in the hands of those in position and power? Ask. Post questions below.

Completing the panel is Transparency and Accountability Network Head Vincent Lazatin. We will also extend invitations to some of our student leaders in the coming days. A sequel of sorts to the "Beating the Christmas Blues" episode (Dec 2007) ...this Post-Valentine special will now discuss managing our feelings of sadness.
Coming back on air is Mary Ann Eala, literature teacher of an all-girl school and Rene (the cool cool Associate Dean for Student Affairs of the more expensive school in Katipunan). We will also have the Tanchanco brothers of Kala (JP and Brian) and young college couple celebrating a year of being together, Marb and Aussy.

Dustin Butler, a Peace Corps volunteer assigned to Asipulo, Ifugao is getting married to Cheng Solomon of the Ecogov project in Nueva Vizcaya this Saturday (Feb 16) --- and voila, they will spend their first day as a married couple with us on air! (tignan mo nga naman....) Ang lakas natin sa Peace Corps... haha. (Ang Peace Corps volunteers ang pinaka-masipag humingi ng donated na libro mula sa Rock Ed, they usually spearhead starter libraries in the areas they are assigned to, so madali mag imbita sa kanila mag guest.. hehe)

We got a few emails asking us to guest more foreign interviewees because the conversation takes a different twist when the hosts are forced to speak in straight English. (haha. translation: ngawit sa ka-i-inggles....)
If, on the side, the NBN-ZTE deal is talked about, please don't blame us.

Let's take a break from watching the circus in the halls of Congress (Cirque de Susmeh) and talk about something else all together.

ROCK ED LISTENS! (1st segment)
After three weeks of our radio staff researching on how the young carry themselves when they are in groups in public places, we will start off this episode by sharing our observations on barkada conversations in the Katipunan area (Miriam, UP, Ateneo), the University belt area (FEU), Espana (UST), and one in the stretch of restaurants by the bay. (DLSU, CSB, PWU) Let's see how differently these groups react to varied circumstances. We observed how they carried themselves in public. (some are more polite than others, I told Bro. Armin, FSC (President of La Salle schools) & Rene San Andress (Dean of Discipline, AdMU) that I didn't get names of specific students because every student bears the name of his school. Yup, kung ano mang gawin ninyo in public, damay ang eskwelahan ninyo.) Good luck. Do text us if you don't want your photos published next week.

Let's evaluate 3 different groups we eavesdropped on for three consecutive Fridays.

Let's talk to pro yoga instructor, Ganesh Upadhyay (of PulseYoga Greenhills) about the basic principles of yoga and how it could possibly be a fitness fit for the Filipino psyche. Ask the FAQs now. We've had the US PeaceCorps, the British accent along with the French..this week let's try Indian! Yeeeey...... Gotta love radio.

Many think that basketball is not the best sport for us (dahil hindi tayo matatangkad..haha) ... maraming nagsasabi na football na lang daw sana ang pinagkaka-abalahan natin --mas bagay daw ito sa katawan ng Pinoy... What do you think?

Lourd is very busy working on (yet another) magnum opus so he might not be with us for a bit --BUUUUT, Myrene Academia (former NU DJ Sandwich, Duster, Imago) will co-host that night. Whee.

Hindi ba talaga nakaka-adjust ang mga middle child at nagiging loner?

They will tell us about birth-order-determined personalities in their own cultures. Maybe we'll find some similarities. We can figure out if it, indeed, is a small world after all. Join them as they talk to Kelly Powasnik and Sherry Manning, both volunteers with the US Peace Corps here in the Philippines. We will ask them what they've learned about us. We can discuss observations they've made while temporarily calling the Philippines home. We might find out things that we don't notice much about ourselves from another point of view. This should be interesting because they are foreigners who have stayed here for a longer amount of time and under "not-so-touristy" circumstances. Whew.

Still in the spirit of the spanking new year, we will be trying to figure out our concepts of LUCK. Ano nga ba ang swerte? Sino ang maswerteng tao? Pag successful ang isang tao, ilang por siento don ang swerte? Mga nananalo sa Lotto --swerte nga lang ba talaga?

According to Wikipeda: Luck refers to that which happens beyond a person's control. This view incorporates phenomena that are chance happenings, a person's place of birth for example, but where there is no uncertainty involved, or where the uncertainty is irrelevant.

We will be talking to three ladies from different fields of expertise. Dr. Ruby Cristobal (of the DOST who hosts her own show at DZMM) and Sr. Rose Uy and Sr. Leela Aneseta of the Brahma Kumaris QC Spirituality Center. Dr. Ruby is a scientist while Sr. Rose and Leela are involved with the "Women of Spirit Series" of their center. All will probably have different tilts on the angles of what we call "luck."

We also sent an invitation to a couple of Feng Shui practitioners, hopefully they reply and confirm their attendance soon. Let's start the year right by talking about rights. Hmm.

11 videos were supposed to be shown last Sept. 21 at Robinsons Galleria’s Indie Cine, as part of the commemoration of Martial Law. This collection of films is collectively called "RIGHTS." The day before the screening, MTRCB gave it an X-rating, making it unfit for public screening.

“Scenes in this film are presented unfairly, one-sided and undermines the faith and confidence of the government and duly constituted authorities for public exhibition.” -MTRCB

Join Gang and Lourd as they talk to the filmmakers, Kiri Dalena, et al. And what their project is really about. What it is and what it's not.

But ---let's also not forget the crucial work of the MTRCB in regulating works. They are given the grave task of regulating our public screenings. Ang hirap n'on! Let's try to appreciate the role of this office and get to know them more so we can support them in their quest for balance.

Here is their mission-vision statement:

To the Public
The MTRCB, as a regulatory board, aims to afford the public exemplary exhibitions in movies and television with the purpose of encouraging production of globally-competitive movies/ exhibitions, which should be both entertaining and artistic, in order to raise the standard of art for the public.

To the Industry
The MTRCB, as a partner in the progress of the Movie and Television industry, strives to provide to the industry opportunites for improvement by implemeting regulations and guidelines acceptable to parties concerned thereby maintaining an atmosphere of partnership and cooperation between the government and the industry.

Both groups have the best intentions. Both groups --doing their jobs. What do you think? At least, let's ask the questions together.

Being International Human Rights Week, Rock Ed Radio decided to do a follow-up episode on two past topics covered.

Our Dec 2 episode was on the Sumilao Farmers' march and as we all know the group arrived Manila last week, walking all the way from Mindanao and is now on a stand-still with the DAR Secretary and San Miguel Foods Inc. Let's talk to the representatives of Saligan and Pakisama, who ably assist the farmers in their struggle to fight for their claims. Atty Aison Garcia and Prof Soc Banzuela will be coming back to the show.

Our July 8 episode, on the other hand, featured the Desaparecidos focusing mostly on the disappearance of Jonas Burgos in April of this year. We'll have JL Burgos and his mother Edita Burgos coming back to the show to update us on their search since that fateful day.

Recently, a group of young artists called the Neo-Angono artists were commissioned to paint a mural for the National Press Club. It was to be unveiled at an event of the NPC. After finishing the work, the piece was revealed on the 55th anniversary celebration. The mural was tasked to visually depict PRESS FREEDOM. On revelation, the mural was edited by another artist, covering elements that were deemed to be "leftist." (viva press freedom!) Here's a portrait of Prof Randy David given a sloppy make-over.
Here's a headline change, with the faces of the Burgos family also altered.

According to Wikipedia, the term paranormal describes "any phenomenon that in one or more respects exceeds the limits of what is deemed physically possible according to current scientific assumptions."

" Some genius decided that phones and cameras should be one. And the world was changed. Millions started clicking at their phones, snapping shots of the life around them. And one day, the temptation to turn the phones around became too much for kids, and the camwhore was born. With this, came a new image of "me." We became our own icons; royalty, our own paparazzo's and stars. People started to see the importance of "me," flaunting it, even. "Check me out! (Snap, snap, snap)!"-- that had to be the sound that closed the millennium. ME-POWER.

These things have lead to the core of this generation: Aren't we the most self-centered generation ever? We are. We are the most image-conscious, self-important batch of kids ever to walk the planet. Despite world-wide turmoil, we spend hours updating our Facebook profiles; hours putting our opinions and feelings into a blog-- as if others care. We spend extra time on what we wear, trying to identify ourselves with brands, bands, movies, even causes. It's a whole operation, for this generation, this construction of "me". And, it's a billion-dollar operation, with the lowly baller ID at its foundation. Jocks, emo kids, valley girls, Northies, Southies, activists, vegans-- are all wrapped up in the construction of themselves. Admit it. "
